Winter Family Activities to Beat Cabin Fever

February 6, 2018

It's still winter and by this time, you and your family may be going a little stir crazy. Here are a few activity ideas to banish that cabin fever!

Visit a Maple Syrup Farm

If you live in the Maple Belt (the hardwood forest stretching from the midwestern US through Ontario, Québec and New England and into the Canadian Maritimes), why not visit a maple syrup farm? This activity is a lot of fun for young kids and is usually very tasty too!

Go Snowshoeing (ages 10+)

This activity is literally not for the faint of heart. Snowshoeing is a great experience and intense exercise. If you want to make your hike memorable, look for guided evening hikes that are family friendly.

Go Tobogganing or Tubing

This classic winter activity is known to put smiles on most faces. If you have little ones, tobogganing is probably the better way to start. (Bring a helmet for those tiny noggins!) However, if you have older children and want to take it up a notch, why not try tubing? Most ski hills have a tubing run and I've seen families and kids of all ages participating.

Visit the Zoo, Aquarium, or a Museum!

If there is no snow for the above activities; aquariums, museums, and some zoos are still open through the winter. Most of these places have activities or exhibits for people of all ages. I know from experience that zoos that remain open are much quieter in winter (unless it's March Break or a long weekend).

Checkout your Local Library or Community Centre

Most libraries and community centres will have activities set up during the winter. Admission is usually free or very affordable. This is a great way to meet other families in your community and maybe set up a few more play dates for your little ones.

Hoping these ideas help you get some more fun out of these long winter months!
